Frequently Asked Questions
Contact us for any questions you may have.
Does the story have to be read in one sitting?
No, 15-20 minutes of reading time is recommended. The main focus should be on igniting discussion through the prompts in the Question Guide and subsequently deepening the reader's understanding through conversation.
Should my child already know the answers to the questions?
This is an opportunity to teach and therefore there should be no expectation that the reader already knows all the answers. With each different story the questions should become easier to answer for the child.
My child is struggling to read the story, should we persist?
No, find a story that your child can read competently so that they may focus on the meaning of the story.
My child likes to flip through the pages before starting, is this OK?
Generally it is OK but in this situation because the stories are intended to be completed in a short amount of time, there is not a great deal of text. Not flipping through the story will allow for predictions to be made based on the information at hand.
My child hates to read, how do I convince him/her to take part?
It would be great if every child loved to read, but that is just not the case. Sit down and have a conversation about the importance of being able to analyse text just like they will have to do in NAPLAN. List the advantages; it is a short story, you will be working with him/her and no there is no writing necessary.
