The Question Guide contains a comprehensive list of things to know before starting.

Here is a sample...

  • The book chosen should be at a level below the reading level the reader is at.  If the text is too difficult for the reader, do not proceed; choose a reader at a lower level. This will allow the reader to concentrate on the meaning of the story and therefore encourage higher order thinking.

  • There is no need for pre-reading, a competent reader should be able to read this text.

  • The comprehension questions from the Question Guide should be asked after reading a block of text on each page. The book is not designed to be read in one sitting. 15-20 minutes should be the approximate amount of time spent questioning the reader.

  • This is not a test but rather a conversation of learning.  Once you ask the question, give some time for the reader to think and respond.  The answers have been provided to enable you to easily give the reader the answer, this is considered a teachable moment.
