Education happens everywhere

In all of my years of teaching there have been many professional development opportunities that have been completely life changing in the way I approach education.

The absolute, stand-out for me was a Focus on Reading course that not only transformed my teaching style but helped my students reach their full potential.

Over the years that I completed this intensive training, I discovered the ways in which children learn about WHAT they are reading and not just HOW they are reading.

My biggest takeaway from this experience was the importance of consistency and repetition, giving children the resources and frameworks they need to become independent learners.

I would spend countless hours researching the varying levels of comprehension skills, starting at literal comprehension, interpretive comprehension and finishing at inferential comprehension. I wanted my kids to get the most out of each text we studied so I focussed my energy on preparing  quality companion guides to each new book we tackled in order to optimise their understanding.

This resource has been developed with the same process in mind. The questions have been researched and linked to the Australian Curriculum, which in turn is what is assessed in NAPLAN. You as the parent, have access to a quality resource, with clear and concise instructions, explicitly teaching your child how to use comprehension strategies to determine their level of understanding. The questions have not been 'dumbed-down'. The correct terminology is used because when your child sits for the NAPLAN assessment, the language would be familiar to them.
